Laser hair removal aftercare: what to do and what is normal

Best Laser Room, Chelsea

Good aftercare is simple: keep the skin cool, out of the sun and away from heat for a couple of days, and keep shaving, never waxing, between sessions.

The first 24 to 48 hours

  • Skip hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga and hard workouts.
  • Avoid perfumed products, deodorant on treated underarms and make-up on treated face areas until the skin settles, ideally until the next day.
  • Wear loose clothing over treated areas.
  • A cool compress or a fragrance-free soothing gel helps if the skin feels warm.

Between sessions

  • Use SPF 30 or higher on any treated skin that sees the sun.
  • Shave as often as you like. Do not wax, pluck, thread or use an epilator.
  • Avoid sunbeds and fake tan for 2 weeks before your next session.
  • Gentle exfoliation a few days after a session helps treated hairs shed.

What is normal

  • Redness and small bumps around the follicles for a few hours, sometimes a day
  • A warm, mildly sunburnt feeling
  • Treated hairs shedding over 1 to 3 weeks, which can look like regrowth
