Waxing removes hair from the root and it grows back in 3 to 6 weeks. Laser reduces the follicle’s ability to grow hair at all, so after a course there is much less hair to remove. Here is how they compare.
How each one works
Waxing pulls hair out by the root. The follicle is untouched, so the hair grows back, and you need the hair to grow out to a few millimetres before the next appointment.
Laser sends light into the hair, where the pigment turns it to heat inside the follicle. Over 6 to 8 sessions, regrowth becomes finer, slower and sparser. You shave between sessions; you never need to grow hair out.
Comfort
Most people find laser easier than waxing, especially on the bikini line and underarms. Laser feels like a warm snap; waxing is a sharp pull over the whole area. Our Alma Soprano Ice Platinum has a cooling tip that keeps the skin surface cool during treatment. Laser sessions also get easier as the hair thins.
Ingrown hairs and skin
Waxing can break hairs below the surface, and those are the ones that grow back into the skin. Because laser reduces the hair itself, many clients see far fewer ingrown hairs, bumps and dark marks. See laser for ingrown hairs.
Cost over time
A wax costs less per visit but never stops. Laser costs more up front, then needs only occasional top-ups. For example, an underarm course with us is 5 sessions at £100 with the 6th free. Compare that with years of waxing every 4 to 6 weeks. All our prices are on the price list.
Who should stick with waxing
Laser needs pigment in the hair. If your hair is grey, white, red or very fine and blonde, laser will not do much. For fine, light hair we offer The Smooth System instead.
The verdict
- Dark or medium hair you are tired of removing: laser is usually the better long-term choice.
- Light or grey hair: waxing or The Smooth System.
- Event in a few days: waxing. Laser results build over weeks.
